MINOR FOOTBALL: Clyda Rovers played Cullen in the Rebel Óg North Cork Final on Friday night in a wintery Kiskeam.
Both sides had met earlier in the year in the league, where Cullen had won that encounter , so it was all to play for. Cullen opened the scoring with a goal, but it wasn't long before Clyda settled with James Buckley and Conor Crowley putting over points, before Cian Cronin put a goal in the back of the net, giving Clyda a 1-2 to 1-1 advantage.
Further first half Clyda scores came from Conor Crowley, Seamus Ronayne, Darragh Meaney and Cian Cronin giving them a half time lead of 1-6 to 1-2. Cullen got the opening score of the second half. Clyda, however were to dominate the game for the next quarter and with points from Daniel O'Callaghan, Seamus Ronayne, Conor Roche and a goal and three points from on form Conor Crowley , Clyda looked to be home and dry with a 2-13 to 1-3 lead.
Cullen had other ideas though, and with a quick succession of three goals and three points without reply Cullen pared back the Clyda lead to just a point. That was, however, to be as close as it got for them.
Clyda gave their all in the last minutes of the game and with excellent leadership from team captain Robert Walsh and great team work from each and everyone of the team from one to 12, Clyda added a further two points from Conor Crowley to give them a three-point win, 2-15 to 4-6.
Team captain Robert Walsh accepted the cup on behalf of the Clyda team. He thanked Clyda mentors Tadhg O'Connor, Chris Buckley, Niall Crowley and Barty O'Connor for all their work throughout the year. Clyda now meet Carrignavar in the county semi-final. Check locally for details.
